Some of the best places for Glühwein in Munich

Glühwein in Munich

I’m a big fan of glühwein (mulled wine), and have been since I tasted it for the first time in Prague a few years ago. I have tried a variety of them in the past years, and here in Munich I have my favorites. To me, not every glühwein is the same, some are sweeter than others, have more or less spices, more alcohol, and sometimes they even come in different flavors. Yup, different flavors, like cherry for example.

I live in Munich since 2012, and since then, I haven’t been going only to the same spot for glühwein, on the contrary, each year I attempt to try new ones, and I still get surprised. So this year I came up with the idea of putting together my favorite spots to have a glühwein in Munich. I considered not only the taste and quality of the drink, but also what makes it special in comparison to others, and, of course, how nice the place where you find it is. Because let’s be honest, ambience also matters, especially if you intend to have more than one.

So here we are, some of the best places for glühwein in Munich:

Schuhbecks

Schuhbecks Orlando, Munich

Alfons Schuhbeck is a famous and celebrity German chef, and in one of his locations in Munich, Schuhbecks Orlando, every year you can try his gourmet glühwein. Last year I tried it for the first time and loved it. I still haven’t figure out what he puts in it that makes it different, it’s delicious, and the price is fair, not to mention it’s located in the charming Platzl, in the heart of Munich.

Why: gourmet glühwein for a fair price in a beautiful location, plus you can also get a a soup or a wurstsemmel (bread and sausage), perfect combination.

Where and when
Platzl 4, Old Town

Mittelaltermarkt

Glühwein in Munich

The Mittelaltermarkt itself is already enchanting, it’s a Christmas Market inspired by the middle ages, where even the glasses of glühwein are special. The atmosphere is really Christmassy and they have my favorite glühwein in Munich.

Why: amazing atmosphere and in my humble opinion, the best glühwein in town.

Weihnachtsmarkt am Chinesischen Turm

Glühwein in Munich

If you want to escape the busy Christmas Markets of the Old Town for a bit so you can have your glühwein more laid back, then this place is what you’re looking for. Of course, their glühwein is also delicious, and the location is very special, right in the middle of the Englischer Garten.

Why: a less busy and more spacious Christmas Market, delicious glühwein, also in apple flavor!

Haidhausener Weihnachtsmarkt

Glühwein in Munich

This small and busy Christmas Market came straight from a fairy tale, and they have different flavors of glühwein for those trying to go beyond the traditional. Every year I go there at least once to have a cherry glühwein.

Why: fairy-tale-like Christmas Market with cherry flavored glühwein.

Oberpollinger

Oberpollinger Dachterrasse

This year’s discovery was the rooftop of the department store Oberpollinger, where you find cozy private little “mountain cabins”, which you can book for you and your loved ones. They offer a view over Munich, and each cabin has a different decoration. Red and white glühwein are offered, where the red is made of Merlot grape, and the white one has a hint of champagne. Fancy huh?

Why: this year with private cozy cabins that can be booked in advance, Merlot glühwein and white wine with champagne glühwein!
