5 reasons do get the Madrid Card

Puerta del Sol, Madrid

Since I first used one, I always thought that city cards are a great way of enjoying the attractions of a place, and at the same time save money. I bought city cards during many of my trips, in some of them they were VERY useful, in others I didn’t use as much as I expected.

Each of these city cards offers you different things, free entrance to innumerous attractions, sometimes discount on restaurants and shops and some even include the local public transportation. On my recent layover in Madrid, I got the chance to use the Madrid Card combined with the public transportation.

My card was valid for 24 hours, but I didn’t actually have the time to use it as much as I wanted to, as you might recall I was in Madrid for only 10 hours and still managed to see a lot. But let me tell you some reasons why the Madrid Card is worth it:

1. You save money

If you plan on visiting many attractions while in town, you will certainly save a lot of money with the card. For example, the entrance to the famous Prado Museum costs €14 alone, with the Madrid Card you not only get to access it for free, but also take the fast lane. For instance, if you visit 3 attractions for €14 in one day, having the Madrid Card would definitely be more affordable than paying for each entrance separately.

2. You have free access to over 50 attractions

Imagine all the main attractions of Madrid plus many more others; they are all included on the Madrid Card. You can check all the attractions included here and plan your visits. Of course, you can only enter each attraction once, but this goes for any other city card.

3. You receive a free city map and guide

When buying your card, you receive together with it a free map of Madrid and a booklet, which is more like a guide of attractions. In it you will find the opening times, instructions on how to get there, address, contact, sometimes which entrance you should go and other important and useful information about each attraction. It comes in 6 different languages just in case, and you can ask them to ship to your home – with an extra cost.

4. You save time

Free entrance is not enough if you can’t manage to visit all the attractions you want because you lost too much time on the queues. That’s why, the Madrid Card allows you to skip them and enter the attractions as fast as possible.

5. And get additional discounts

Apart from having free access to over 50 attractions, you also get extra discounts on restaurants, bars, tours, shops, and even to watch Flamenco. Some of these discounts are up to 30%. Segway tours, the Madrid cable car, souvenir shops, the Bernabéu Stadium tour, some of them are even for free, others you get great discounts.

Good to know

  • The Madrid card is available for 24h, 48h, 72h and 120h, prices varying between €47 and €77;
  • You can pay a little extra and have the Madrid Tourist Travel Pass combined, which gives you unlimited access to public transportation. I highly recommend doing this.
