10 European capitals for a romantic weekend getaway

Before moving to Europe I always thought that everywhere in the continent was romantic, now, after 7 years living here, I still think the same. All the castles, medieval streets, parks and gardens, rivers, cafes and restaurants, everything seems romantic. I have previously shared 10 romantic one-week European itineraries and 10 romantic two-week European itineraries here on the blog, this year (just in time for a last minute getaway for Valentine’s Day) I came up with my personal suggestion of 10 European capitals for a romantic weekend getaway.

When it comes to romance, some of these capitals are pretty much obvious and they might pop up immediately into your mind, while others not so much. Apart from my 10 suggestions, I also made sure to highlight some romantic spots and activities for each one of them, just to give you some extra inspiration. Read on…

Paris

Romantic spots: the Eiffel Tower and its surroundings, Champs Elysées, Montmartre and the Seine.
Romantic activities: a romantic dinner with a view, a stroll by the Seine, spend some quiet time on Île de la Cité.

Romantic spots: the Schloss Schönbrunn and the old town.
Romantic activities: kiss with a view at the Riesenrad (Ferris wheels), have a coffee in a beautiful café, attend a performance at the Staatsoper.

 

Copenhagen

Romantic spots: Nyhavn, Tivoli Gardens and the Little Mermaid.
Romantic activities: take a canal boat tour, dine in a Michelin star restaurant, spend time together at Frederiksberg Have.

Romantic activities: take a boat ride to Stockholm Archipelago, have a picnic in one of the beautiful local parks, enjoy together the view of Skansen, wander around stunning Gamla Stan, have a Fika together.

Romantic spots: Het Stenen Hoofd, Grachtengordel (canal belt), Vondelpark, Staalmeestersbrug Love Lock Bridge.
Romantic activities: take a private canal boat tour (rent your own boat), ride on a bike together around the city, don’t miss the canals at night, and make to give/get a tulip from the flower market.

Romantic spots: the Trevi Fountain, Gianicolo Hill, Trastevere, Tiber River, Spanish Steps.
Romantic activities: romantic dinner with a view, a stroll by the Tiber River, get lost in the narrow streets of Trastevere, kiss in the Spanish Steps.

Romantic activities: enjoy the view from the Prague Castle, wander around the streets of the old town, take a walk at Petřín Park, have a cozy dinner.

Romantic spots: Triple Bridge, Dragon Bridge, and Butchers’ Bridge, Ljubljana Castle, old town and Ljubljanica River.
Romantic activities: ride a bike around the old town, take a boat tour, watch the sunset from the Castle, stroll along the river and cross the city’s famous bridges.

Romantic spots: The Danube, Fisherman’s Bastion, the Citadel.
Romantic activities: take a boat tour, have dinner by/on the Danube, admire the view from the Fischerman’s Bastion and the Citadel, go to a thermal bath.

 

San Marino

Romantic spots: the three fortresses Guaita, Cesta and Montale, Piazza de la Liberta, old town.
Romantic activities: visit the three fortresses and admire Italy from above, have a local wine in one of the local cozy restaurants, wander around the medieval streets, don’t miss the view from Monte Titano at night when the city gets quiet.
